Maria Sibylla Merian

Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717) was a famous artist and researcher of insects. Her special interest lay in the metamorphosis of butterflies. In 1699, she set out on an adventurous trip from Amsterdam to Surinam in South America with her 21-year old daughter Dorothea Maria. She carried out research in this Dutch colony for two years. She published the results of this work in 1705 in the book “Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium” (the transformation of Surinamese insects). The images in this calendar are taken from the book.
